Organic almond oil cold pressed

Gustav Heess

The almond harvest for the production of our cold-pressed organic almond oil takes place during the main harvest season in autumn in California, where a hot, dry Mediterranean climate and a developed water infrastructure create ideal conditions for the cultivation of almond trees. At our Caloy production facility in Modesto, California, which is recognised as the world leader in almond oil production, we monitor the entire production process - from farming to processing. In regular audits, our quality management team checks the cultivation conditions and compliance with our agreements. This enables us to guarantee consistently high quality as well as long-term availability.

Our oil mill, which was commissioned in 2016, uses expeller presses specially developed for us in Germany, which produce high-quality almond oil through gentle mechanical pressing without additives. Multiple filtrations eliminate natural residues in order to fulfil our demanding quality and purity standards.

In contrast to many mills that process different types of oil in universal presses, we specialise exclusively in nut oils to avoid mixing. Our priority is the highest product quality and reliable delivery security. Thanks to our extensive storage capacities in the USA and Europe, we ensure fast and reliable delivery at all times.

Quality control is seamless thanks to our 6-stage system:

1. By our agricultural engineers in the field

2. By our own Caloy laboratory on receipt of the almonds

3. After pressing into oil

4. In-process controls at each individual refining step

5. Final inspection of the oil after refining

6. Before delivery to the customer by our officially DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 accredited Gustav Heess laboratory in Germany

The entire process of producing our cold-pressed organic almond oil is based on compliance with ecological and social standards to ensure the high quality of the product and the health of the ecosystem.

Sustainability & responsibility

In California, over 90% of almond farms are family businesses, most of which are run by the third or fourth generation. In addition, almost three quarters of almond farms are smaller than 40 hectares. The Almond Sustainability Program (CASP), which was introduced in 2009, implements sustainability measures in the areas of water, air quality, energy and land (nutrient use, pest control and bee health). Water consumption is a particularly important issue in the cultivation of almonds. This has been reduced by 33% per 0.5 kg of almonds through the use of micro-irrigation systems, irrigation on demand instead of time-controlled irrigation and by optimizing irrigation through soil maps.

Waste is minimized by using all by-products from almond cultivation. In addition to the almond kernel, the two by-products shell and skin are used as animal feed and stable bedding.

Bees are the most important helpers on the almond farm, as they are needed to pollinate the almond blossoms. Through the Honey Bee Best Management Practices (BMPs) program, almond farmers actively support bees and as one measure, for example, 93% of farmers provide clean water for bees to drink and cool down during the pollination season.

Our own Caloy production facility is strategically located in the middle of the growing area. This saves CO2 through short transportation routes and guarantees the fresh quality of the almonds.
